We're looking for someone to help out around the Brainery. It's part-time (12-15 hours a week, $14/hour), entirely at the Brainery, and involves all kinds of super glamorous* and not-so-glamorous things.

• Being in charge of the space during classes on the following days:
   - Saturday or Sunday, daytime (6-8 hours, varies a bit week to week)
   - Wednesday evenings, 5-10:30pm
   - Friday afternoons or evenings, usually 2 Fridays per month (# of hours will vary)

• Keeping the space clean and organized - set up, material prep, and some cleaning. You'll need to be able to move tables, carry stuff up and down the stairs, sweep, mop, do dishes and the like.

To apply: Send us an email to jobs@brooklynbrainery.com. Attach a resume if you want (pdf please!), but most importantly tell us why you want to work here and if you have any scheduling issues that would impact your ability to work on the three days listed above. Please apply by Friday February 26, 2016.

*Just kidding, none of it is very glamorous.

Touring the Eldridge Street Synagogue

Last night, we were lucky enough to partner with the Museum at Eldridge Street for an after-hours art and architecture tour (featuring delicious knishes from Yonah Shimmel!).

We examined everything from lampshades to stained glass windows and the original wood floors in the beautifully-restored building, hearing about its history from 1887 to the present. The main sanctuary fell into disuse throught the mid-20th century as the congregation shrunk; in the 1990's a major restoration began, and the synagogue reopened in 2007 as the Museum at Eldridge Street.

I can't say enough wonderful things about the synagogue - it's really a gem and such a special place that we're lucky to have in NYC. Be sure to visit them for a tour or check out an upcoming program, especially if you've never been!

A few photo highlights of the night are below.

Over the past few weeks, we've been featuring some local Brooklyn cats looking for homes in our weekly class newsletter. We've compiled them here for easy reference and sharing. Check these guys out and meet your new best friend!

Rigatoni via Kitty Loft

image

Rigatoni should be a famous internet cat by now! She is hilarious, a true Brooklyn girl with attitude who likes nothing more than to be a couch potato next to a human. She is wickedly bright and adds humor to Kitty Loft. She has been up for adoption now for what seems like years, as she was first with City Critters and now residing at Kitty Loft. Change her whole life and give her a window with some sunshine to lay in and a human best friend.

Read more here or contact Annie for more information about Rigatoni.

Junior via Brooklyn Animal Action

image

Junior is an inquisitive, sweet young kitty looking for his forever home. What's wonderful about Junior is he's a true kitten-at-heart and would be just as content in a one-cat-home as he would be in a home with other cats to play with! Junior has been fully vetted and has a clean bill of health. If you'd like to meet your new best friend Junior, please email Tara

Godfrey via Brooklyn Animal Action

image

Godfrey wears his heart on his head, a heart shaped black mark on top of his head is the first indication he is nothing but love. Godfrey is a very sweet, gentle kitty who gets along great with other kitties but truly loves people. Godfrey has been neutered, tested negative for fiv/felv, microchipped and vaccinated. He's ready for his forever home!

If you would like to meet Godfrey, please contact Claire

Leonard via Brooklyn Bridge Animal Welfare Coalition

image

Leonard is a sweet grey boy who, while appearing strong and stoic, is a complete and utter mush to anyone who offers a good head rub. He is more a laid-back fella, but hardly minds mixing it up with various strings and toys. When Leonard is not lounging around and being his tenderhearted self, he will be rubbing up alongside, looking for as much affection as he can get.

Leonard is about 5 years old, neutered, vaccinated, FIV/FeLV negative and microchipped. For more info and to set up a time to visit Leonard in his Ditmas Park foster home, please email BBAWC.

Shy Ann via Brooklyn Animal Action

image

Shy Ann was found in a backyard, hungry, cold and very skinny. She was rescued by a kind friend of Brooklyn Animal Action and has been living with a rescuer and her cats. Shy Ann is warming up to people and other cats. With love and patience, she will continue to overcome her shyness. Shy Ann has been spayed, vaccinated and is ready to be adopted. If you would like to meet her, please contact Claire

May's Nonprofit Spotlight: New York Abortion Access Fund

Starting in May 2016 (that's this month!), we'll be donating 5% of our monthly gift certificate sales to a local nonprofit.

This month, we've selected the New York Abortion Access Fund. NYAAF supports anyone who is unable to pay fully for an abortion and is living in or traveling to New York State by providing financial assistance and connections to other resources. NYAAF provides funding directly to clinics on behalf of the people we serve. When a clinic we work with sees a patient who needs assistance, NYAAF is one of the potential funding sources to which they turn. The clinic then bills us for the amount we commit to covering.

If you know of a NYC-based nonprofit that could benefit from a little extra support, please let them know to fill out our submission form here.

And if you'd like to pick up a gift certificate, that's easy too!

Introducing: A Summer of Pancakes

12591933913 822ea6e9d1 b blog

Let's be up-front about this: we've decided this summer is going to be A Summer of Pancakes, so we're hosting a ton of classes about pancakes to celebrate!

You could spend ages making pancakes and never make the same kind twice: they're sweet, they're savory, and they've made it to every corner of the globe. The International House of Pancakes is going to seem like a provincial backwater after we get done with this.

We're kicking things off with Flying Flapjacks: The History (and Science!) of the Humble Pancake, a lecture on June 6th spanning all things pancakes. You'll learn the secrets to perfecting your silver dollar pancake game while being introduced to what the world holds in store, from the savory Ethoipian injera to Japan's red-bean-filled dorayaki.

Once we've whet your appetite (pun intended) we're spending the rest of the summer with hands-on pancake-making classes, covering new creations and old favorites. All classes are vegetarian friendly with the exception of okonomiyaki.

Sweet, Filled Pancakes from Japan and Korean: learn to make homemade red bean paste, and design a branding iron for your adorable creations

Savory Indian Dosas and Sourdough Ethiopian Injera: pancakes that serve as both plate and utensil can't be beat (SOLD OUT!)

Vietnamese Rice Crepes and Two Scallion Pancakes: banh xeo, Korean pajeon and the lovable scallion pancake

Okonomiyaki: the Japanese king of savory pancakes [note: this is without a doubt greatest pancake in the world]

Blintzes, Apam Balik, and the Many Faces of Crepes: cheese- and fruit-filled blini and Malaysian street food

Going All-in on American Pancakes: exploring the sweet and savory cornerstone of American breakfast

Are you excited yet? Get ready to get flipping.

The Art of Brooklyn Film Festival, running from June 4-12, is the world’s only independent, international festival for, by and about the Brooklyn indie film scene—a diverse, vibrant local scene with global influence. We accept films from all over Brooklyn and the world, as long as their makers are connected to the borough in some way (i.e. through personnel, content, theme, setting, etc.). We see the borough as a whole, where there are no "wrong" neighborhoods or communities.

Be sure to check out a screening during this month's festival!

Adopt Grizzly & Napoleon

We have a couple of cool cats under our care who need forever homes - read on for details!

Grizzly

image

Grizzly is a sweet stray who wandered into my yard in June a severely injured jaw after suffering blunt force trauma to his face (check out his before photo, below). Despite the pain he was in when we first took him in, we could tell that he was a fighter and adventurer at heart and wouldn't let his injury stop him from trying to climb every surface and eat any food he could find.

image

before surgery

We took Grizzly to about a million vets, and in late June he received surgery to remove most of his teeth, including all of his canines which had been damaged in the fall, and to move his jaw back into the socket. Needless to say, surgery didn't slow Grizzly down one bit - he spent his time in the recovery room attempting to escape and quickly ate his dinner as soon as we got home. He doesn't seem to notice that he's missing most of his teeth and even enjoys dry food as a snack.

Now that he's fully recovered and receiving his vaccinations, Grizzly's ready to retire to a life indoors. He's neutered, FIV/FeLV negative, about four years old and a generally low-key guy who enjoys hanging out around people. He's a special guy and needs a special adopter to help him adjust to living indoors again. If you're interested in adopting Grizzly, email us

Napoleon

image

Found dirty and disheveled near an industrial area, handsome, sleek Napoleon quickly took up the role of housecat once he was safely indoors. And although he has a super serious look, it turns out this boy is a real sweetheart!

You’d never know to look at him now that he ever spent any time outside. Napoleon is friendly and respectful with people as well as with other cats, and his foster says that he’s always curious about what you’re up to. He’ll come to sit in your lap if you ask him, and he likes to indulge in the comforts of indoor life by lounging around like the happiest of cozy cats. He enjoys playing with toys—but, his foster adds, he’s still confused why he can’t defeat them! In short, Napoleon is an all-around pleasant and low-key cat, perfect for any home.

Napoleon is approximately 2 years old, neutered, FeLV and FIV negative, and up to date on vaccines. If you’d like to schedule a meet and greet, contact Tara Green at catsbkny@gmail.com!
